Many assume a washing machine agitator is a single, solid metal piece. In reality, it consists of durable plastic components—primarily the auger and the agitator base. The auger draws clothes inward and downward to the base, creating an effective scrubbing motion. When these parts wear down, the auger may rotate freely in both directions by hand, indicating it may be time for maintenance or replacement.

Tips From a Tech:

  • We recommend using a small amount of grease when replacing Agitator Kits if no grease is present on the old thrust washer. For agitator grease, order part number 350849. Please be aware that there are different size Agitator Kits that depend on the model of the appliance for compatibility. There are multiple lengths for different models. Please verify the compatibility of your appliance with the correct kit prior to ordering.
  • Installing these can be tricky, as depending on the model, the agit kit may be way too deep inside the agitator to bolt it down to the tub. A "trick" is to get a socket wrench, 12-24" extensions, and while holding the agitator, use the extensions and the tub nut to hold everything together (which is what the black retainer is for included in some kits) While you have it together, holding the agitator in your left hand and the wrench in your right hand....slowly align the agitator and lower it into the tub until you can feel the bolt begin to tighten down and it'll keep it all together. The agitator drops about an inch when it's installed into the tub, and this causes the agit repair kit to pop up and possibly fall apart, forcing you to pull it all back out and reset.
